Netflix debuts the first teaser trailer for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, an anime spin-off film from the Henry Cavill-led fantasy series. The fantasy franchise is based on a series of novels and short stories from Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and centers on Geralt of Rivia, one of the last of the titular group of beast hunters who develop supernatural abilities at a young age to battle wild beasts and monsters. The Witcher property first gained steam in the U.S. with the trilogy of video games from Polish developer and publisher CD Projekt Red, which has sold over 50 million copies as of May 2020.
THE WITCHER SEASON 2 TRAILER REVIEW
Nightmare of the Wolf will follow the adventures of young Vesemir, and take place several years before his adventures with Geralt that fans are familiar with. Despite the difference in time, the monster hunters’ place in the world doesn’t seem too different. Most people hate and fear them, but Vesemir’s only concern in the world is monster hunting and the coin he gets paid for doing it — the Witcher way.
KISSING BOOTH 3 TRAILER REVIEW
While this trailer shows us quite a few of Vesemir’s early battles, we know from Netflix’s description of the movie (and its title) to expect one particularly harrowing conflict with a werewolf at the center of the film. Along with that battle, we’ll also probably get plenty of backstory on Geralt’s mentor — and some of his contemporaries — before we see him again, much older and grayer, in The Witcher season 2.SNAKE'S EYE MOVIE FINAL TRAILER REVIEW
Vesemir will be voiced in Nightmare of the Wolf by Theo James from Castlevania, and who played Young Vesemir in The Witcher’s first season. The show will also feature Lara Pulver (Sherlock) as Tetra, Graham McTavish (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) as Deglan, and Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica) voicing Lady Zerbst.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is set to debut on Aug. 23, 2021. But that isn’t the only Witcher series that Netflix has on the horizon. The Witcher season 2 will premiere on Dec. 17, while The Witcher: Blood Origin, a live-action prequel series, is expected on the streaming service sometime in 2022 or 2023.
