Netflix has unveiled its expansion of the Witcher universe with the trailer for a new animated movie, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. Although intended as a stand-alone feature, it has strong connections to the live-action series starring Henry Cavill, as well as further exploring the high fantasy world of Andrzej Sapkowski's novels. The kinetic style of anime makes a fantastic fit for the witchers' world, particularly in the depiction of its monsters, and the new film promises plenty of action as well as the answers to some lingering questions about the past.
Being a Witcher is hard, but becoming one is even harder. Fans of Henry Cavill’s The Witcher Netflix series and CD Projekt Red’s games will get to see the process that one must go through to become a Witcher in the series’ first spinoff adaption, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. The new animated film set in The Witcher universe got a new trailer on Monday.
Where the first major trailer showed off a some jokes and action, Monday’s trailer lingers on the gruesome process of taking children and transforming them into monster hunters. But fans still get plenty of time to watch a young Vesemir — Geralt’s mentor and star of Nightmare of the Wolf — haggle for gold and slay monsters.
Initially revealed in early 2020, with more details announced at WitcherCon last month, Nightmare of the Wolf takes place years before Vesemir ever met Geralt. The animation studio behind the film is Studio MIR, which is also responsible for The Legend of Korra and Voltron: Legendary Defender. It’s directed by Han Kwang II and written by Beau de Mayo. It also boasts an impressive voice cast, including Theo James (Castlevania) as Vesemir, Lara Pulver (Sherlock) as Tetra, Graham McTavish (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) as Deglan, and Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica) voicing Lady Zerbst.
