Episode 6 of The Book of Boba Fett hit Disney Plus on Wednesday, bringing us back to the former bounty hunter's quest to become a Tatooine crime lord after last week's incredible Mandalorian adventure. We're also up to the penultimate episode of this live-action Star Wars show.

Mando agreed to join Boba's gang as they take on the dangerous Pyke Syndicate, a rival criminal group that wants to use Tatooine in its spice-running operations. However, he decided to go and visit little Grogu (aka Baba Yoda), whom we last saw being sent off with Luke Skywalker for Jedi training. This show is set around five years after Return of the Jedi and shortly after The Mandalorian season 2.

PREVIOUS EPISODE

The Book of Boba who? A chunk of this episode is spent with Grogu and Luke Skywalker (who's once again CGI de-aged to look like he did in 1983), as the little guy is caught between his attachment to Mando and his training as a Jedi.

It ends with Luke presenting him with a choice – he can take the beskar chainmail Mando had forged from his staff and return to his armored buddy or take a lightsaber once used by Luke's late master Yoda and continue his training.

Ugh, I don't envy Grogu this decision (though I'd 100% take the lightsaber). Social media is gonna have plenty of opinions until we find out in next week's season finale or in The Mandalorian season 3.

UNCHARTED MOVIE FINAL TRAILER REVIEW

With Cobb’s allyship under threat after his Bane encounter, will his people join Fett’s tribe and fight? Will Grogu? Faced with the Sophie’s choice of following the Jedi or Mandalorian way, and one episode left that surely has to go out with some sort of bang, maybe the young foundling/padawan, along with those frustrating Jedis, will lend their muscle. An epic battle featuring all of these non-Book of Boba Fett characters would certainly explain why so much screentime has been dedicated to them.

There are lots of ultimatums in this episode; here’s hoping our decision to subscribe to this Star Wars story was the right one.

Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) apprehends a few members of the Pyke syndicate passing by his territory and attempts to send them off. When they refuse, he shoots them down, except for one, who he lets off with a warning.

Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) arrives to meet Grogu but is met by R2 and made to wait. Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) trains Grogu in the way of the Jedi, although the little one still struggles with his distractions. Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) greets Mando and cautions him against meeting Grogu since the Jedi must not have attachments. Mando insists since he flew all the way to check on him, but Ahsoka instead agrees to hand over Mando’s gift for him.
Heading back to Tatooine, Mando meets with Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) and Boba (Temuera Morrison) as they address their small group, including Krrsantan. Fennec expresses that they need to strengthen their forces, and Mando says he may have a solution. He speaks to Cobb Vanth about joining them, but the Marshall says he needs to think about it. Soon after, Vanth's town is approached by a mysterious stranger, Cad Bane, who warns the Marshall against joining Boba Fett. This leads to a shootout where Vanth is injured, although his fate is unknown. Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker tells Grogu to choose between Mandalorian’s chainmail and Yoda’s lightsaber.
THE BOOK OF THE BOBA FETT EPISODE 6 REVIEW

The show delves deep into Star Wars lore in another episode that features less of Boba Fett and instead focuses on other essential characters. It’s rewarding to have Luke train Grogu, similar to how Yoda trained Luke many years (films) ago. He even carries him the same way, which is indeed heart-warming. Luke’s de-ageing effect is substantially better than when we last saw him in ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2. Seeing Luke and Ahsoka together is phenomenal for fans of the animated series. Additionally, Luke helps Grogu remember his past, which gives us a throwback to Order 66 when the Jedis were executed. Director Dave Filoni and co-writer Jon Favreau stay respectful to the prequels, original trilogy, and animated series all at once in this episode. This level of detail and care for the profound mythology of the franchise heralds a critical turning point for Star Wars.

“From the Desert Comes a Stranger” offers some astute Western swagger and introduces a menacing villain with Boba Fett ties to the live-action universe, but the storytelling is, once again, less concerned with its protagonist than it is The Mandalorian and the repurposing of nostalgic Star Wars elements. Are the writers bored with Boba Fett?
