The battle between the League of Villains and the Meta Liberation Army continues in episode 22. Twice’s traumatic past is revealed as he tries to overcome it to help Himiko. Skeptic’s Quirk forces him to confront his demons. Meanwhile, Dabi fights the powerful Ice Manipulation Quirk user, Geten. After successfully getting over his trauma, Twice floods the streets of Deika City with his clones. He finds Mr. Compress and Tomura, and the current head of the League of Villains asks for his help to get to Re-Destro. There’s a compelling juxtaposition to the game through “Sad Man’s Parade” between Skeptic’s control of his dolls and Twice’s own duplications and how these similar abilities contrast in small, but essential ways. Ideally, Skeptic wants to absorb Twice’s Quirk and have a replication and puppet Quirk that is even more beneficial than what he currently wields. This sinister master plan involves wiping out what’s left of Twice’s broken mind so that his Quirk can be used to scatter Re-Destro and create an entire squad of copies for this volatile villain. So you know, it’s basically multiplicity, but with much more genocide.
Every detail given about Twice’s past is fitting and succeeds in his mission to humanize this hyperbolic wildcard from the series. Twice only started cloning himself because he suffered from a crippling loneliness, not because he had malicious intent to improve his Quirk. It’s such a simple, human bit of backstory that does more for the character than what an extended monologue would provide. Twice is currently stuck in an incredibly dangerous situation, but the initial desires that push him on this path to rhetoric are very recognizable.

Similar to what we learned about Himiko Toga in the previous episode, “Sad Man’s Parade” presents Twice not so much as an evil mastermind whose aim is revenge, as it portrays him as a frightened, hurt victim of circumstance. He finds solace in the League of Villains because he is vulnerable and without confidence, just like Himiko Toga, not because he is fed by a bottomless pit of anger. What’s just as touching as the circumstances behind the genesis of Twice’s Quirk is that he’s finally regaining his faith in the department. Twice he was paralyzed with fear of his Quirk after witnessing some of his clones being eliminated, raising doubts in his mind as to whether he is really the original version of himself or just another clone.+

This is one of My Hero Academia deepest material and “Sad Man’s Parade” offers Twice a closure in this area that is incredibly cathartic and also allows him to passionately embrace his powers again as he regains his groove. It manages to be as inspiring as the moment when Shoto Todoroki takes ownership of the fire side of his Quirk and he emerges from the shadows of his father’s trauma, which is saying something for a secondary villain. It’s so satisfying when Twice’s clones can overwhelm Skeptic’s dolls and he can take comfort in his powerful Quirk instead of letting fear and doubt control him.
